Choosing the right outfit can be the toughest part of getting ready for your Seattle family photo shoot, especially when everyone in your family has a different style. At the Happy Film Company we encourage families to wear clothes that are comfortable and coordinated but not matchy-matchy. We want everyone to feel natural and relaxed but also confident and ready to rock it in the spotlight!
Feeling comfortable in your family photos is a huge priority. You won't be able to fully enjoy yourself, play with your kids and look your best if you're fiddling around with a wedgie, wincing at the blister forming on your ankle, or struggling to breath because those pants are buttoned too tight. Comfort is especially important for children since they don't always have the same ability to 'put on a happy face' and pretend they're having a great time. When we take pictures of babies and toddlers, parents often bring cute little shoes that are brand new but unfortunately we usually spend the entire shoot picking up these shoes from the floor. Their kids aren't used to wearing the new shoes that are still stiff and they get kicked off again and again and again.
COLORS & PATTERNS
We recommend choosing a color pallet (ex: blue, yellow and white) or going with different shades of the same color (all different shades of blue). Usually, it's easier for us to tell you what not to wear to your family photography session. Avoid multiple patterns that will clash, like stripes and checks and polka-dots at all once. Avoid clothing with brand logos or printed images. Graphic tees will totally destroy the polished look you're going for in your family photos.
Avoid sports clothing like sweatpants or sweat shirts. It looks best if everyone is dressed to the same level of formality — we don't want one person in a party dress and another person in jeans (that would just be silly, right?).
One of the best ways to really spice up your photos and give them a finishing touch is to focus on coordinating the little details of your outfits. For example, if mom is wearing a yellow dress, put a yellow necktie around dad's neck and perhaps a pair of yellow shoes your baby and a yellow bow in your little girl's hair. This kind of attention to detail in your Seattle family photos might be subtle enough that people don't realize what you've done but they will (for some "mysterious reason") love your photos and think you guys look awesome.
