What outfits should we wear to our Seattle family photo shoot?

Choosing the right outfit can be the toughest part of getting ready for your Seattle family photo shoot, especially when everyone in your family has a different style. At the Happy Film Company we encourage families to wear clothes that are comfortable and coordinated but not matchy-matchy. We want everyone to feel natural and relaxed but also confident and ready to rock it in the spotlight!

COMFORT

Feeling comfortable in your family photos is a huge priority. You won't be able to fully enjoy yourself, play with your kids and look your best if you're fiddling around with a wedgie, wincing at the blister forming on your ankle, or struggling to breath because those pants are buttoned too tight. Comfort is especially important for children since they don't always have the same ability to 'put on a happy face' and pretend they're having a great time. When we take pictures of babies and toddlers, parents often bring cute little shoes that are brand new but unfortunately we usually spend the entire shoot picking up these shoes from the floor. Their kids aren't used to wearing the new shoes that are still stiff and they get kicked off again and again and again.

The Esposo family is rockin' their outfits. They’re clothes fit perfectly with their location. See how mom's bright turquoise stands out from the flowers, how their son's yellow shirt matches the flowers and is a complimentary color to mom's dress and how dad is wearing neutral colors that are different shades of blue (which are in the same color family as mom's dress). Their outfits are beautiful but also comfortable and fit in with their outdoor laid-back photography session. Mom even paid extra attention to detail with her necklace matching her son's shirt. Perfecto!

The Britt family looks amazing in their beach photos at Golden Gardens in Ballard. Their outfits works so well because their color palette is very neutral and earthy - perfect for the beach! Mom and baby are wearing different shades of brown pants. Mom's boots and baby's striped shirt match dad's dark blue outfit. And their earthy tones don't blend into the background because they're wearing contrast; both light and dark shades.

The Brunsch family looks fab because their bright colors jump out and grab your attention from the neutral background. If they were wearing neutral colors they might blend into the scenery more and their portraits wouldn't be as striking and cheerful.

COLORS & PATTERNS

We recommend choosing a color pallet (ex: blue, yellow and white) or going with different shades of the same color (all different shades of blue). Usually, it's easier for us to tell you what not to wear to your family photography session. Avoid multiple patterns that will clash, like stripes and checks and polka-dots at all once. Avoid clothing with brand logos or printed images. Graphic tees will totally destroy the polished look you're going for in your family photos.

The Marza family did a great job working with a red color palette and incorporating variety of texture/patterns. Dad's checkered shirt is the same color as mom's sweater so they match but because it's checkered it makes the photo more interesting and it helps each person stand out individually so they don't all just blend together as one solid blob of red. Their little boy is wearing blue which again, is a complimentary color so everyone fits together but it makes him stand out on his own too. This strategy is the best for family photos - you all fit together but your individuality is also captured! Success!

The Kovtunenko ladies look gorgeous in their multi-patterned dresses. Normally we advise families to avoid mis-matched patterns because they often clash, however, it works for these ladies because they intentionally chose mis-matched patterns. It creates a very bohemian kind of look and for a summer photo shoot in the willow trees, what could be better! The point is that their outfits were all connected with a common theme.

FORMALITY

Avoid sports clothing like sweatpants or sweat shirts. It looks best if everyone is dressed to the same level of formality — we don't want one person in a party dress and another person in jeans (that would just be silly, right?).

The Mon-Ros family did a great job of coordinating while also keeping variety. You can see they have themes like - the boys are wearing white tennis shoes and the girls are wearing leather sandals. Everyone is in blue or cream.

DETAILS

One of the best ways to really spice up your photos and give them a finishing touch is to focus on coordinating the little details of your outfits. For example, if mom is wearing a yellow dress, put a yellow necktie around dad's neck and perhaps a pair of yellow shoes your baby and a yellow bow in your little girl's hair. This kind of attention to detail in your Seattle family photos might be subtle enough that people don't realize what you've done but they will (for some "mysterious reason") love your photos and think you guys look awesome.
