What to Wear in Your Seattle Family Portraits - Poplin Style Can Help

What to wear for family photos? Mellicia will help you. My wonderful friend and business buddy, Mellicia Marx is the owner of Poplin Style. She empowers people to live their best lives, embracing fashion as a beautiful way to explore and express personal identity and creativity.

After you scroll through these photos I just took of Mellicia’s family, head over to her blog and read this: 5 Questions to Ask When Choosing What to Wear in Family Photos

On the morning of Mellicia’s family photo shoot, I was soooo beyond excited to see what she would be wearing when I showed up at the King Street Station in Pioneer Square. This family is stylist AF so my camera and I were EXCITED. Clothing makes a HUGE difference in family photos, taking images from good to great. Most of my clients take time to plan to outfits before their shoots, sometimes sending me photos of the clothes laid out on the bed the night before. I get lots of emails asking what to wear and my best advice to is to check out our outfit advice blog post, study photos on our blog and ask Mellicia at Poplin Style. haha

For Mellicia’s photos, I LOVED how her bright orange blouse brightened up all the photos, which were taken against monotone backgrounds (marble and cement). The boys were in rich dark blues which also made them POP off the lighter colored backgrounds.. Yummy for eyes because the clothing not only communicated this family’s individual style but it made them stand out. When taking photos, I’m always looking for ways to shine a spotlight on the people; sometimes it’s literally the light that is shining on them, making them brighter than everything else in the photo, sometimes it’s putting negative space around them so they are standing inside of a frame and sometimes it’s great outfits that catch us like eye-candy. Enjoy scrolling through the beautiful photo collection and seriously, email Mellicia if you want help with looking and feeling fabulous at your next photo shoot or just in life in general. She’s bomb and you can’t be around her for long before you feel bomb too! ;)

Volunteer Park Conservatory - Seattle Family Photography in Greenhouse

The Yu family is back for their second Seattle Family photography session in 2017 - woohoo! They had family visiting from out of town so I always try and make extra room in the schedule to squeeze in these last minute 'extended family photo shoots'. I realize family schedules are tricky to coordinate so one of my goals at the Happy Film Company is that we're as flexible as possible to make YOUR life as easy and stress-free as possible.

With the Yu family we were going to walk around the UW campus but the rain chased us inside to the world's coolest indoor photo shoot location on Capitol Hill - Volunteer Park Conservatory! Baby Hannah is in love with Minny mouse so she took her Mini Mouse backpack on an adventure through the jungle and desert greenhouses. She also does this crazy cute thing where she kicks her feet constantly when you hold her up in the air (I couldn't stop taking video of this!). Of course, it never takes long before the tears start to pour from babies and thankfully mommy had some crackers ready to bring back the smiles. Thank goodness for food - we love it at every age :D

Thank you so much Yu family for another fun Seattle family photo shoot. I love working with you guys and I'm excited to see you again soon as Hannah gets bigger and bigger!

Seattle Family Christmas Photos at Macy's Department Store

Never thought I'd be doing a family portrait session in the Macy's Department store in downtown Seattle but sometimes tiny frozen fingers and runny noses lead you to unexpected places. The Wilde family are such great clients - always so easy and flexible - so when the winter chill came to Westlake Park and their cute kiddos started crying, we decided to head indoors for warmth. Thankfully Macy's knows how to decorate so we rode the escalators up to Santa Land and took photos in the Christmas Decoration section. Who knew?! Of course this would be a fun location for family photos - there are perfectly decorated trees and silly little singing Christmas trees. How could we top that for Christmas photos? haha! What out shoppers of America, the Happy Film Company has just done it's first mall photo shoot! Maybe next year I'll make my assistant dress up as Santa and pay my video editor overtime if she'll be an elf and we'll take over the traditional mall Santa photo booth. ha! I think I've been drinking too much eggnog. ;) Merry Christmas Wilde family - you guys are so wonderful. See you in 2017 for more happy photos! :D // Chamonix
